What has the U.S. furniture sector been like in the past few years?

While the U.S. furniture retail market saw steady growth in 2019, the surge in remote work and e-commerce in 2020 led to a sharp increase in demand. However, supply chain challenges in 2021, shifting consumer priorities in 2022, and economic downturns in 2023 resulted in a gradual decline in sales.

The Future of the Global Furniture Market

The global furniture market—valued at $579 billion in 2023—is projected to reach $873 billion by 2030, with 35% of sales expected to come from online purchases despite recent challenges, according to USA Today’s article From the Big Box Boom to the Online Shopping Explosion. As 2024 approaches, modest growth is anticipated amid shifting consumer behaviors and ongoing economic uncertainties. Retailers that integrate technology into their shopping experiences are well-positioned to succeed in this competitive market.

User Survey Results

Survey results from 50 people reveal that they often struggle with choosing items that match their existing décor and ensuring proper sizing, which leads to long decision-making times. Additionally, they find that current platforms lack personalization features.

User Interview

To gain a deeper understanding of the customers, I interviewed ten individuals from various professions, ranging in age from 21 to 65. The interview was structured with open-ended questions to encourage them to share all aspects of their habits and pain points.
